Why the fake profile?

Catfish on EllenWith a plethora of social media available it is or should I say, it should not be surprising that some people have several aliases. I didn’t even realize there are people out there who even resort to stealing other people’s identity until I saw the film,”Catfish.” According to Wikipedia “Catfish is a 2010 American film, directed by Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman, involving a young man[Yaniv Schulman] being filmed by his brother and friend as he builds a romantic relationship with a young woman on the social networking website Facebook.” What is interesting is that his love interest is not the beautiful young woman he has fallen in love with but a lonely older woman whose pretense and lies catches up to her when he shows up unexpectantly at her door. Both are shocked at this meeting: she, because he actually showed up and he, because the person in front of him looks nothing like the profile picture. This is because it isn’t her. She had stolen the real Megan’s identity. See the video below for see the meeting with the real Megan.
Meeting the real Megan

I think it’s unfortunate that people resort to lieing to get people’s attention. It’s horrible when someone falls in love with a fake person and realizes too late that person didn’t even exist or someone pretending to be someone else(aka:catfish). This film is definitely a cautionary film for individuals looking for love online as is the showcase Catfish on MTV which stars Yaniv as the host. Check out the show below.
